Avionica Awarded SBIR Funding to Develop Wireless Airborne Data Recovery

Avionica has been awarded research funding under the US Government Small Business Innovative Reasearch (SBIR) program to research wireless airborne data recovery for the Navy.

The objective of SBIR N05-004 is to "Develop airworthy, lightweight, secure wireless technologies to transfer flight data to a ground station or a handheld system immediately after the flight terminates".

Phase I requires the vendor to "provide a conceptual design, which will produce an integrated solution based on the T-45C architect". The requirements further specify that "The proposed solution should have minimum power requirements and be low in weight. Proposed technology will interface with the Airborne Data Recorder (ADR) via a standalone or embedded system in the aircraft. The data will be transferred to a ground station or a handheld system".

Under Phase I of the program, Avionica will develop and prototype a wireless ground data link to enable rapid, secure download of Airborne Data Recorders (ADRs) onboard the US Navy's T-45 training fleet. This data may subsequently be animated to provide students a visual and parametric mission debrief.

Such analyses and animations are central to the concept of MFOQA (Military Flight Operations Quality Assurance), which has been cited as the single most powerful weapon available to reduce human error mishaps.

The Secretary of Defense has challenged the military to "reduce the number of mishaps and accident rates by at least 50% in the next two years". A Naval Safety Center analysis of 1998-2003 Class A mishaps shows that 23 of 143 Class A mishaps (16%) had a “high probability to virtual certainty of prevention” by an MFOQA process.

Avionica, Inc. specializes in complete flight data management solutions. Products include secureLINK, the airborne wireless Ethernet router, the miniQAR, the world’s first miniature quick access flight data recorder, the RSU, a handheld flight-data recorder monitoring and download tool, and AVSCAN.flight, a commercial and military flight data analysis tool.
