BAE SYSTEMS Regional Aircraft have successfully
certified the Avionica miniQAR and secureLINK
wireless router on Flybe’s fleet of Dash 8 Q400 aircraft,
and have been requested to deliver solutions on Q300.
BAE Systems Regional Aircraft has the relevant EASA
approvals to carry out third party engineering work. They
have the capabilities to install this equipment onto
further aircraft types.
As an OEM, Regional Aircraft is aware of operators
needs and has the engineering ability to support
operational issues across customers with various aircraft
types.
Airworthiness Requirements
The system was primarily introduced to fulfil the requirement for
European aircraft to implement a Flight Data Monitoring
programme from January 2005. However since
installation there have been notable cost savings to the
operator.
The FDM programme requires Flight Data Recorder
(FDR) Data to be downloaded on a regular basis.
Current FDR download procedures on aircraft may take
a great deal of time and consume valuable man-hours,
which can render them an impractical solution. A system
combining miniQAR and secureLINK enables the
operator to achieve faster and more efficient routine
access to the FDR data required for Flight Data
Monitoring (FDM) or Flight Operations Quality
Assurance (FOQA).
The Modification
This modification allows the seamless transfer of FDR data without human intervention.

Flight data is initially
saved in the miniQAR. Once the aircraft is on the ground
(interlocks made) the data is transferred to the
secureLINK wireless router and transmitted via antenna
to the airline’s computer network (FDM/FOQA Analysis).
